Weekly Calendar & Prayer List for June 29, 2008

THANK YOU AND GODSPEED TO FRANK & MATILDA CLUETT.  Today is the Rev’d Canon Dr. Frank Cluett’s last day with us.  The Parish of Calvary Church has been blessed spiritually, emotionally, and personally by the presence of Frank and Matilda for the month of June.  We wish them a safe journey back to Newfoundland.  Many blessings to them!

PATRICK PERKINS, our seminarian intern, will be returning to Virginia.  Please join us for coffee hour on July 6th to say goodbye and thank you to an “Intern Extraordinaire”!

PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE IS NO PARKING IN FRONT OF THE TRIPLE DOORS OF BORO HALL!  The Boro needs access to that building – even on Sunday mornings!  Thank you for your consideration.

ECW YARD SALE – It’s all over for another year!  The support was overwhelming.  As well as our wonderful, hard-working ECW members, we had more than 30 men, women, and members of the Youth Group all helping and working together to make the Auctions and Yard Sale a resounding success.  The weather was perfect (somebody is watching over us)!  People shopped and sat outside enjoying a hot dog and goodies from the Bake Sale, talking about the puppet show and generally enjoying the day and the feel of a very warm and welcoming environment.  We made over $7,200. profit from the Furniture Auction, Silent Auction, and Yard Sale.  The ECW would like to thank everyone who supported this two-day event in any way.  A special thank you goes to our families who gave up their weekend in order for us to do this.

FEED YOUR NEIGHBOR!  The summer months are difficult for our local food banks, especially with our current economic environment.  Please remember those in need while grocery shopping.  Donations can be left in the basket at the back of the church.  Thank you!

The MISSION TEAM IS COLLECTING LINENS, LIGHTWEIGHT VESTMENTS, AND OTHER CHURCH-RELATED ITEMS TO GIVE TO THE CHURCH IN PUYO, ECUADOR.  If you have something your parish would like to donate, it can be dropped off at St. James, New London, 76 Federal St., Mon. – Fri., 9:30-11:30 a.m. before July 13, or you can call me at 367-3526 for pick-up.  The items will be carried as part of the team’s luggage.  They are allowed 2 fifty-pound pieces and an 18-pound carry-on so keep that in mind when you consider donations.  Breakable items were carried successfully last year, but there is a chance that it would not make it to Puyo safely.  Thank you.  Ellen Adams, Seabury Deanery Secretary.

IN SEARCH OF GREEN THUMBS!  Mary Elizabeth is looking for some help maintaining their flower garden.  This is a lovely space that brings residents much joy; it was started by the Jefferies family a few years ago.  Anyone who loves flowers and could devote a little time there during the summer would be most welcome.  Contact Joan Wesley at 401-348-2928 for more information.  Last summer, Calvary members escorted Mary Elizabeth residents to the Noank-Mystic Community Band concerts in Mystic River Park.  We are looking for volunteers to continue this service.  The concerts are held on Tuesday evenings through August 5.  Volunteers meet at Mary Elizabeth at 6:45 p.m. to take the residents in wheel chairs to the park.  The distance is short, the concerts are great, and the residents love it!  So do the volunteers.  Contact Joan Wesley at 401-348-2928 to participate in this wonderful ministry.

CALVARY MUSIC SCHOOL is seeking live auction items for their summer fundraising event happening Sat., July 19th at the Mystic Arts Center.  Do you happen to own a second home/condo that could be used for a long weekend or possibly a week by a friend of Calvary Church?  Items that also really help the school include golf outings, fishing trips, event tickets, original artwork and new furniture.  Many parishioners have generously given items like these in the past.  If you are possibly considering donating, please speak to Simon Holt at 705-3037 or Liz Hall at 572-6048.  Thank you for helping our school!

HABITAT NEWS!  Visit Habitat of Southeastern Connecticut’s newest undertaking – Restore!  This retail outlet accepts donations of new or used materials and fixtures and sells them at very reasonable prices.  All proceeds go toward building more homes in New London County.  Now you can finish that home improvement project and help someone in need.  Restore is located at 400 New London Rd., Salem, CT (next to Salem Country Gardens).  For more information and store hours, phone 860-892-9553.

SUMMER FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCED:  The Mystic Area Ecumenical Council’s Summer Film Festival starts on Thurs., July 10 and continues on a biweekly basis through Aug. 21.  Again this year, the host churches have some recent award-winning movies for your enjoyment.  Mark these Thursdays on your calendar:  The Cup is on July 10 at St. Mark’s-show time is 7:00.  Here’s a show you’ll love; Buddhist monks discover soccer, and their lives are forever changed.  The film producer’s description is :   Buddhism is their philosophy; soccer is their religion.  The other three movies are scheduled for July 24 at Union Baptist Church with a family film at 6:00 p.m., on Aug. 7, Juno will be shown at the Noank Baptist Church at 7:00, and on Aug. 21, Under the Same Moon will be shown at Mystic Congregational Church at 7:00.

A NOTE FROM THE AMERICAN RED CROSS:  As we approach the summer, we are asking for support in maintaining our state at an adequate blood supply.  The need for blood is constant.  Unfortunately, it is a tradition for some blood donors to “take a vacation” from giving the gift of life.  To keep our hospitals at a safe inventory, we must collect 650 units of blood each and every day in Connecticut.  This poses an issue during the summer months, and we often do not collect the amount of blood we need.  If you would like information on blood drives, please contact Matt White at 860-284-7049 or by e-mail at whitemaa@usa.redcross.org.
