DO YOU HAVE A PASSION FOR SINGING?  Stonington Choral Society, a non-auditioned community chorus, is looking for singers of all voice types to join us in our exciting 9th season of great singing and great fun!  September 10th and 17th have been set aside as open rehearsals where all are welcome to come check us out.  There is no commitment necessary, so join us to see if the Stonington Choral Society is the right fit for you.  Rehearsals will be on Wednesdays from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Pine Point School, 89 Barnes Road, Stonington.

PAWCATUCK NEIGHBORHOOD CENTER’S EMERGENCY FOOD PANTRY is completely empty of the following items:  instant mashed potatoes, pork and beans, kidney beans, canned pears.  Please help them restock!

ORGAN CONCERT – next Sunday afternoon, Sept. 7 at 4 p.m. at The United Church of Stonington.  Guest Organist:  Peter Edwin Krasinski, first prize winner, American Guild of Organists National Competition, noted conductor, organist, and music educator.  Krazinski’s Bach playing has been hailed at “sublimely spiritual” and his improvisations as “stunning”.  Program: Prelude and Fugue in A minor by J.S. Bach, Elgar’s Enigma Variation, and a surprise improvisation at the end!  Concert is free and open to the public.  Suggested donation is $10.  For further information, call 535-0879.  The historic United Church of Stonington’s organ, built by E. & G.G. Hook of Boston in 1870 is one of the finest pipe organs in New England and is a musical treasure of extreme rarity in southeastern Connecticut.

COOKS ARE NEEDED FOR THE WARM SHELTER.  We provide a meal for 50 people on the third Wednesday of every month.  There are sign-up sheets on the bulletin board in the Parish Hall.  If you have any questions, call Candy Sanford at 535-3399.

FEED YOUR NEIGHBOR!  The summer months are difficult for our local food banks, especially with our current economic environment.  Please remember those in need while grocery shopping.  Donations can be left in the basket at the back of the church.  Thank you!

HABITAT NEWS!  Visit Habitat of Southeastern Connecticut’s newest undertaking – Restore!  This retail outlet accepts donations of new or used materials and fixtures and sells them at very reasonable prices.  All proceeds go toward building more homes in New London County.  Now you can finish that home improvement project and help someone in need.  Restore is located at 400 New London Rd., Salem, CT (next to Salem Country Gardens).  For more information and store hours, phone 860-892-9553.

A NOTE FROM THE AMERICAN RED CROSS:  As we conclude the summer, we are asking for support in maintaining our state at an adequate blood supply.  The need for blood is constant.  Unfortunately, it is a tradition for some blood donors to “take a vacation” from giving the gift of life.  To keep our hospitals at a safe inventory, we must collect 650 units of blood each and every day in Connecticut.  This poses an issue during the summer months, and we often do not collect the amount of blood we need.  If you would like information on blood drives, please contact Matt White at 860-284-7049 or by e-mail at whitemaa@usa.redcross.org.

LITERACY VOLUNTEERS WANTED!  Want to give back to your community?  With only one hour a week you can make a big difference in the life of a beginning reader.  Volunteer at a local school reading with students, and you and your student will reap the benefits!  Training sessions are scheduled for September 10th and 17th at 6:00.  More sessions will be scheduled as needed.  Contact Amber Stolz at 203-561-9959 or at astolz@jfec.com
