PLEASE NOTE that the Rev’d Amjad Samuel will be away on vacation from August 14-28. In the case of a pastoral emergency, as noted on the following page, you may phone the Rev’d Douglass Lind at 860.535.0838 or our Sr. Warden, Deb Burgess, at 860.535.2236 or at 860.608.8237. Phyllis will also be on vacation during the weeks of August 17 and August 24.
The TRANSITION TEAM IS PRESENTLY INTERVIEWING CANDIDATES FOR THE POSITION OF INTERIM RECTOR. Prior to the arrival of an interim, any questions/concerns regarding finances, buildings & grounds, staff, or any non-liturgical matters should be addressed to Deb Burgess, our Senior Warden. Any questions/concerns regarding liturgical matters should be addressed to Amjad.
DESK, SOFA, LAMPS NEEDED! Due to the recent flooding and our rector’s vacant office, we are looking for a replacement sofa for the living room in Calvary House and a desk, desk chair, and lamps (standing?) for the rector’s office. Please contact Deb Burgess at 860.535.2236 or debbgs@gmail.com.
UPCOMING STEWARDSHIP EVENT: September 1, 2009 – 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall: Amjad Samuel will present a repeat of the second Stewardship Conversation: “New Testament Foundations of Stewardship”. Again, a light supper of Pakistani food will be kindly provided by Amjad and Mollie (byob). Barbara Barnes, who attended the August 4th presentation of this second conversation, observed: “How wonderful to be focusing Calvary on year-round Stewardship. I particularly admire how Amjad can make us look at things from a totally different perspective. His gift to us is to turn our heads and make us think and see!”
It’s BACK TO SCHOOL TIME! Once again, Calvary is supporting local foster children by donating backpacks filled with all the school supplies they need to start the year! If you would like to participate, please see Susan Chambers in the courtyard after church to choose a child or make a monetary donation. The deadline for backpacks is Aug. 23. They can be left either in the back of the church or the office. A shopping list is available in the church office. Questions? Just contact Susan at 860.535.1268.
OUR SUMMER SCHEDULE OF PREACHERS: Aug. 16 & 23, The Rev’d Douglass Lind, Aug. 30 & Sept. 6, The Rev. Amjad Samuel. Reminder: the 10:00 service will resume on Sept. 13.
Our friends at the PAWCATUCK NEIGHBORHOOD CENTER need donations of canned fruit, boxed cereal, jars of jam and jelly, and any other non-perishable food items. Next time you’re grocery shopping, why not pick up a few extra items and place them in the basket at the back of the church. Many local families need our help!
COFFEE HOUR HOSTS are needed. It is an easy ministry to provide a few simple sweets and to make coffee for those wanting to share fellowship and camaraderie after the 10:00 service. If you could do this just once or twice a year, it would be a tremendous help to Calvary. Please sign up on the sign-up sheet posted in the Parish Hall. Your help will be appreciated!
YARN DONATIONS NEEDED: Please donate clean, usable yarn to the RSVP Retired & Senior volunteer program of Southeastern New London County. RSVP volunteers make hats, scarves, blankets & sweaters for the homeless, elderly, and babies of single mother. Call 860.444.0006, ext. 117.
THREE IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER:
• Sept. 13 The Rev’d Erik Larsen, Canon for Transitional Ministry, will preach at both services and discuss the search process during coffee hour at 11:00.
• Sept. 27 All Parish Meeting to Elect the Search committee at 11:00 in the Parish Hall.
• Oct. 4 “Telling Our Story”, 4-8 p.m. Potluck Dinner – Please bring a dish to share. Details to follow.
