CALVARY’S MUSIC - FROM SIMON HOLT
On Sunday, March 7, Kiara Hwang will be giving a Flute Recital beginning at 3:00pm. Kiara Hwang graduated from Connecticut College in 2009 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music. Since graduating, she has been spending time doing various activities from weed-whacking the arboretum in New London to performing her flute whenever she got a chance. This recital will be her last performance before finally flying back to her home country, South Korea, in May 2010.
At Connecticut College, she privately studied with Peter Jarvis, Patricia Harper and Arthur Kreiger, who have become her music mentors over past five years. She plans to continue her studies in music with a focus on composition by attending a graduate school in her future.
She wants to express special thanks to Calvary Parish for giving her a chance to perform at the beautifully intimate space of Calvary Church.
In her program, there are five pieces covering a wide range of time, from Baroque to 1980s. She hopes that every single piece can reach the audience with its own charm.
I hope you will be able to join us for Kiara’s recital! Our next Choral Evensong takes place on Palm Sunday, Sunday, March 28, beginning at 5:00pm. Calvary Singers will lead the worship with a set of Versicles and Responses by Smith, the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in B flat major by C.V. Stanford, Lotti’s Crucifixus, the set Psalm of the day and two hymns. The service will open with David Morgan’s A Palm Sunday Antiphon, We look forward to welcoming you to this wonderful service.
Please give me a call on 860.535.3334 if you would like any further information about any of our upcoming events.

NEWS FROM YOUR VESTRY
I am sure by now you have received a copy of the resolution passed at the February 18 vestry meeting. Your vestry spent a lot of time in discernment before the one hour discussion that led to a unanimous vote to pass the resolution. The difficult section of the resolution was, obviously, bullet five ” that nevertheless, in order to achieve a balanced budget for 2011, we foresee that, based on current information, we will expect to be able to fund a part-time Christian Formation position, but we will not be able to fund two clergy positions in the 2011 budget.”
Vestry member Kathie Hewitt resigned from the vestry in January. Thank you, Kathie, for giving your time and talent to Calvary. The vestry would like to fill this unexpired two year term. If you are interested in this important ministry please forward your name to Jennifer Parsons or Deb Burgess.
The vestry will meet March 11 at which time we plan to pass the 2010 budget. Vestry meetings are open to all parishioners. Please feel free to attend the meeting or contact a clergy or vestry member with any questions or concerns.
During this time of transition we can look at all the changes and the effect on Calvary as the glass being half empty. I believe that our glass is half full. Change can be difficult if we allow it to be. Change can be good if we are open to the spirit guiding us through the transition period.
Holy Week will be here before we know it. I hope you will take time from the hustle and bustle of life to attend the many varied services leading us to Easter morning. Faithfully yours,
Deb Burgess, Senior Warden

RECTOR SEARCH REPORT
The Search Committee continues to meet weekly. The first draft of the profile is being compiled by our editor with each member having contributed a piece of the content. Pictures and photos of parish life are being collected to enhance the profile, and when finalized it will be published electronically. Prior to its being published, we will meet with the Vestry to review it with them. We are also identifying interview questions and preparing for a Mock interview to take place during this month. The Vestry will be invited to observe this interview. A posting of the status of our Search process will be listed on the Episcopal Transitionery Ministry Newsletter website. We have also spent some time discussing spirituality. So, we continue to move forward, still keeping our target date of October 2010 to welcome our new Rector. Keep us in your prayers.

AN INVITATION FROM SEABURY DEANERY
If you’re interested in going on the Ecuador mission trip for this year, please let the coordinators for the trip know as soon as possible. There are already 13 confirmed participants and another 7 seriously considering, with room for up to 23. They need to know who wants to participate from the Deanery parishes so that they might have the “first opportunity” to register before the slots are filled. The trip is scheduled for August 5 - 16. Several people have already begun serious fund-raising efforts in order to pay for the trip. We encourage all who feel “called” not to let finances stand in the way of going. What we do need right now is notification of commitment to go. If you’re interested in signing up or finding out more about this trip, please contact gowarner@comcast.et (860-536-1238) or gracebarnum@att.net (860-536-3449. |

The CNS children will be lending a hand for the Calvary Church Lenten luncheon on March 15th. They’ll be serving dessert - fresh gingerbread they helped to bake! We hope you’ll be able to come and enjoy what the kids have made.
CNS is starting a campaign to Save Our Fairy Tree (S.O.F.T.). Many of us have fond memories of the Fairy Tree located near the Founders’ Cottage in the back yard. The Fairy Tree has rotted to a point where it’s no longer safe for kids to play in.We’d love to have a similar looking tree made that’s safe, but we need your help with recommendations on what to do and who could do it. Please email Christine Cabral at cabrals@rocketmail.com with ideas and suggestions ASAP.

A BRAND NEW PROGRAM COMING TO CALVARY!
Introducing a Brand New Program Offered Here at Calvary . . . Starting March 8, Interactive Language Learning Solutions LLC, will bring to Calvary Church fun, engaging, play-based foreign language learning experiences for children ages 2-6. Research shows that children ages 6 months to 6 years old are at the optimal age to learn a second language. During this “Window of Opportunity”, children’s brains are hard-wired for language acquisition and
young children store both their native language and all other languages in the same area of the brain, making second language learning much easier than at any other time in life. After this “Window of Opportunity”, people then store a second or third language in another part of the brain and will not ever be able to reach the same level of fluency or proficiency as a person who was exposed to foreign language at a very young age. Cognitive development and school success is also enhanced by second language learning.
Why must our children be dual language speakers?
· To gain a competitive edge in the global world they will live and work in.
· To help ensure American students are the best in the world and can compete with all students around the world.
· Most colleges require two years of a foreign language. Highly competitive schools require three and Ivy League schools four. Many students struggle in high school if they have not had previous exposure to foreign
language at a young age.
· In order for our students to communicate effectively, work collaboratively, and contribute to the global marketplace, our students will need to be able to converse fluently with others from around the world.
· Research shows that learning a second language improves brain development, scholastic aptitude, and self-confidence.
· Research shows that learning a foreign language increases children’s creativity and flexibility of mind.
The instructors of Interactive Language Learning Solutions are all native speakers who will bring cultural, native music, song, dance, storytelling, and traditions to the sessions. Some of the benefits of Interactive Language Learning Solutions program include:
· “Developmentally Appropriate” learning strategies and activities to optimally support young learners’ acquisition of a second language.
· Teachers are native Mandarin Chinese and Spanish speakers.
· Program is fun, interactive, and engaging to encourage full student participation in their second language learning.
· Curriculum is theme-based to build foundational and functional vocabulary.
· Full-immersion in structured play environment with native speakers.
· Continuous stream of Mandarin Chinese or Spanish language promotes children’s acquisition and understanding of a second language.
· Program fosters understanding of the world and an appreciation of other cultures.
· Song, movement, books, and play makes learning a second language fun.
Sessions are now formed, but please visit us on our web site at http://www.interactivelanguagesolutions.com for more information or upcoming registrations.
